In addition to his assertive voice in defending human rights in the world’s largest Muslim-
majority democracy, Denny JA is widely recognized as a prolific writer.
His work consistently
amplifies the struggles and aspirations of ordinary people.
Across more than four decades of published work (1981–2025), he has written 102 books in
Indonesian & English, including 34 fiction titles, 46 non-fiction volumes, and 3 companion
works, many of which center on marginalized communities, social injustice, and the everyday
heroism of the powerless.
His creative output also includes 13 films and 82 animated videos, often portraying the voices
rarely heard in mainstream discourse.
Denny JA stands among Southeast Asia’s most translated contemporary writers. By 2025, 28
of his fiction books, 15 non-fiction works, 13 films, 66 animated videos, and 77 opinion videos,
ranging from reflections on Sufi spirituality to insights on dignity, work culture, and humanity,
had been translated into English.
Each film and animated production has also been equipped
with English subtitles to reach wider global audiences.
His body of work, spanning literature, film, and social commentary, continues to serve one
central purpose: to ensure that the stories of the small, the silenced, and the forgotten find a
resonant voice on the world stage.
